A shipping container is a type of storage box used to load anything from small items to bulky goods for shipping overseas or transporting interstate. Made out of marine grade corten steel, a shipping container comes in a range of sizes including 10′, 20′ and 40′ lengths (3m, 6m and 12m) and 8 ½ feet (2.6 meters) high. There are also ‘high cube’ containers available that are an extra foot taller in height. They come standard with a pair of double doors at one end and a wooden floor. A shipping container is the most inexpensive way of importing and exporting products in and out of the country.
The shipping container was invented by a business named Malcom McLean. he built the shipping container in order to replace the ‘break bulk’ method, the method of shipping and handling dry goods before 1930. Today, the shipping container is used throughout the world.
There is a variety of different types of shipping containers available, with each built to serve specific purpose. The most common is called a general purpose shipping container, made with four walls and two doors. Other types of shipping containers include Open Top containers, Flat Rack containers and Refrigerated containers.
The Open Top shipping container also has four walls and two doors, but it does not have a fixed roof. Instead, it has a removable tarpaulin which includes heavy duty eyelets and is still water and wind resistant. This type of shipping container is widely used for moving tall objects.
The Refrigerated shipping container is specifically used for the transport or storage of volume goods – suitable for perishable cargo such as vegetables, fruit, meat, etc.
Flat Rack shipping containers are designed to transport cargo larger than the dimensions available in General Purpose and Open Top Containers. They consist of a flat bed with fixed or collapsible ends. Usually used for transporting items such as a yacht or wide machinery.
